A Double Taste of the Newly Released 2018 Chesebro La Montagne Sauvage !

THE STORY

I’m always on the lookout for winery announcements that they are releasing a new vintage of one of my favorite wines.  When Chesebro announced the release of the 2018 La Montagne Sauvage, I headed to the tasting room with my neighbor and friend, Sue. We were able to taste both the 2017 and the 2018 vintages. Caught up in the moment by its youthfulness, I later realized I didn’t capture any tasting notes

The La Montagne Sauvage has been one of my favorite Rhone blends made with grapes from the CM Ranch right here in Carmel Valley.  The fact that one can get this wine for $35 is one of the reasons I respect Chesebro.  Quality wines representative of our terroir at affordable prices.  Stop in and tell them Decanting Monterey sent you. 

THE WINES

Today, I am showcasing just one Chesebro wine.  I last presented their wines to you in December 2025 here: Chesebro Releases Its 2017 Classics! 2018 Chesebro La Montagne Sauvage, Arroyo Seco AVA, Monterey County, 13.7% ABV, $35 (#1734)

Winery Notes: “Our proprietary Rhone belnd of Syrah (80%), Grenache (15%) and Mourvedre (5%) modeled after the legendary wines of the Southern Rhone Valley in France. Grown at 1800′ elevation, this is our flagship wine and our most popular blend from a small 2.5 acre vineyard in the mountains of Carmel Valley. Rich and broading with aromas of dark blackberries, chaparral, sage and all-spice. An ageworthy and deeply profound example of what these Rhone varietals can do on the granite soils of Upper Carmel Valley. ONLY 80 Cases Produced”

94 points – Wine Enthusiast: “This blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre coalesces with power and grace. Dense aromas of boysenberry and graphite lead from the nose into a thick palate awash in creamy tannins. Flavors of roasted espresso, chocolate, blackberry and peppercorn are peaking now, so find this bottle and drink up.” — Matt Kettmann

My Review: Dark garnet in color. Get past the alcohol to the dark, intense plum, black berry, dark cherry and some cola aromas. Cola and dark cherry on the palate.  This is going to grow into a lovely wine.  Give it some time. April 2026

Exceptional Lopai Cellars Tasting Right Here on the Monterey Peninsula!

THE STORY

I love it when an out-of-area winery comes to the Monterey Peninsula and that was the case when Lopai Cellars from Paso Robles recently showcased their wines to the American Wine Society Monterey Chapter. Paul Lopez and his wife Michelle brought their exquisite lineup for us to taste in lovely Pacific Grove. At this event, we tasted 6 of their wines, complemented by appetizers provided by our members.

This is my first post all about Lopai Cellars wines.

THE WINERY

Their story begins with Paul and his son Brian’s ancestors who settled in the San Luis Obispo area in the 1860’s, farming the land before there was the plethora of vineyards we see today. Fast forward to modern times. Paul brings a wealth of winemaking experience, having worked over the past 10 years with some of the most esteemed labels in Paso Robles. Now he’s channeling that expertise into his own craft at Lopai Cellars, nestled on the picturesque west side of the Willow Creek District in the Paso Robles AVA, just a short 10.5 miles from the stunning coastline. They purchased their vineyard in 2019 and produced their first wines in 2023.

2023 Lopai Cellars Rose, Willow Creek District, Paso Robles, 13.5% ABV, $35 (#1735) 100% Grenache

My Review: Rosy peach, apricot in color. Watermelon, peach, Meyer lemon on the nose. Light palate. April 2026

2023 Lopai Cellars Albariño, Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo County, 12.5% ABV, $50 (#1736)

Winery Notes: “Nose- honeysuckle, vanilla, peach, pear. Palate – Nectarine, tangerine zest, lychee, Nilla wafer, granite. crisp and clean.”

My Review: Light golden in color. Some viscosity in the glass. Grilled pineapple. Lots of minerality on the palate with bright acidity and a touch of grilled pineapple. A very rich palate. April 2026

2021 Lopai Cellars Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Willow Creek District, Paso Robles, 13.8% ABV, $80 (#1737)

Winery Notes: “Nose – cherry cola, slight eucalyptus, dried petals, cranberry, mixed berry pie Palate – Tart cherry, cocoa, raspberry, tomato leaf, hint of basil, woodiness, chalky tannins, structured, red berries, complex.”

My Review: Beautiful dark garnet with a purple rim. Plum, juicy blackberry and blueberry on the nose. Rich, smooth palate with some cherry cola notes. Very tasty. April 2026

2021 Lopai Cellars Estate Syrah, Willow Creek District, Paso Robles, 14.9% ABV, $80 (#1738)

Winery Notes: “Nose – cassis, cracked peppercorns, violet, ripe blackberries Palate – Tart under ripe raspberries, savory notes of peppered duck breast, and a touch of fennel seed.”

My Review: A dark beauty in the glass with a dark purple rim. Alcohol on the nose is compensated by a lovely texture on the palate. Deep fruit comes off a bit over extracted. This was the group’s favorite wine of the event! April 2026

2021 Lopai Cellars Estate Petite Sirah, Willow Creek District, Paso Robles, 13.2% ABV, $80 (#1739)

Winery Notes: “Nose – sage, allspice, blueberry, clove Palate – Cranberry sauce, chocolate covered coffee bean, roasted herbs, sweet tobacco, luxardo cherry, lavender. Smooth, round, supple finish.”

My Review: Inky in the glass – so dark, not a rim to be seen! There is a smokey darkness of black fruit on the nose. Smooth palate of dark blackberry and blueberry. Some tannins on the finish. We liked this wine and it sold out quickly! April 2026

2021 Lopai Cellars Nocturnes, Willow Creek District, Paso Robles, 14.1% ABV, $80 (#1740) 58% Petit Verdot/38% Petite Sirah/4% Syrah Blend

Winery Notes: “Nose – floral, blueberry, mint, and spice Palate – Concentrated dark fruit is layered with savory spice and floral.”

My Review: Darkest possible purple in the glass. Pretty legs decorate the glass. Intense palate of juicy dark fruit. Nothing over extracted here just delicious. This wine gets a “wow” from me! I took some home. April 2026

Birthday Celebration with Bubblies and More from Caraccioli!

THE STORY

My best friend from high school came down so we could celebrate the midpoint between our birthdays. While waiting for our table at popular Nora’s restaurant in Carmel-By-The-Sea, we popped over to Caraccioli Cellars for a quick tasting. We were only a couple of bubblies in when our lunch reservation came through – and our server invited us to simply come back after our lunch! Sweet!

2020 Caraccioli  Brut Cuvée, Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, 12% ABV, $65 (#1729)

Winery Notes: “Hints of green apple and lemon curd balanced by rich autolytic characteristics of brioche and almond add a touch of honeyed depth. The fine creamy mousse and well integrated acidity lead to a finish that lingers endlessly.”

My Review: Tiny bubbles in the glass. Yeasty on the nose with faint creamy apple to balance acidity.  March 2026

2020 Caraccioli  Brut Rosé, Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, 12% ABV, $75 (#1730)

Winery Notes: “Nuances of freshly baked bread and delicate brioche reflect time on the lees, adding depth and texture. A lively, mouthwatering acidity drives the wine forward, creating an energetic and refreshing profile that is both celebratory and sophisticated. The finish is crisp and persistent, leaving a lingering impression of red fruit and refined toast.”

My Review: Barely pink in the glass. Delightful creamy mouse – very balanced and delicious. A nice crispness on the finish. A favorite. March 2026

2025 Caraccioli Rosé of Pinot Noir, Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, 12.8% ABV, $40 (#1731)

Winery Notes: “Delicate notes of melon, citrus zest, and ocean spray leave the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip.”

My Review: Perfume on the palate with banana notes on the finish. March 2026

2024 Caraccioli  Gamay Noir, Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, 13% ABV, $45 (#1732)

Winery Notes: “Prominent juicy blueberry and cherry flavors shine through supported by hints of red raspberry and a touch of minerality. The texture is smooth yet lively, carrying the fruit gracefully through to a lengthy, polished finish that lingers with fresh red fruit and a delicate savory note.”

My Review: Ruby in color. Cranberry and plum on the nose. Fresh and tasty. A little bit like a cherry jolly rancher, a slight touch of tannin on the finish. Chill a little first and this could be a fun wine. March 2026

2023 Caraccioli Pinot Noir, Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, 13% ABV, $60 (#1733)

Winery Notes: “Subtle nuances of spice, rose petal and red fruit frame the palate leading to a silky-smooth finish. Elegantly powerful and transparent, the bright red fruit is highlighted while savory notes play in the background.”

My Review: Viscous in the glass and garnet in color. A mellow nose of alcohol balanced by charred broccolini (wait – that was our lunch!). Cranberry and crushed red cherry on the rich palate. Flavorful with a nice mouthfeel. Not your typical SLH pinot, in a good way. March 2026

Catching Up with Bernardus!

THE STORY

Anticipating a wine pickup, we took our large pup to his first wine tasting at the Bernardus Winery Tasting Room in Carmel Valley Village. He loved the faux grass on the edge of the tasting patio and was a pretty good boy while we tasted a few newer releases. However, my tasting notes were not up to my own standard. Some deserve a re-do on a future visit.

THE WINERY

I’ve written many times about founder Ben Pon’s vision to grow quality Bordeaux blends right here in Carmel Valley.  I am hopeful that Bernardus will not give up on that dream. Their Marinus Bordeaux-style blend has long been our favorite Bernardus wine. I understand the 2025 Marinus will be a field blend from the Marinus Vineyard.  After that?

THE WINES

2024 Bernardus Sauvignon Blanc, Griva Vineyard, Arroyo Seco AVA, Monterey County, 12.7% ABV, $28 (#1681)

Winery Notes: “Our 2024 Signature Griva bottling has aromas of lime zest and lemon curd accented by notes of grassy minerality. The palate exhibits full flavors, hints of tropical fruit with meyer lemon, grapefruit, and a rich mouthfeel are supported by refreshing acidity. This year our Griva Sauvignon Blanc is 100% Sauvignon Blanc with no added Semillon. It was so expressive we decided to bottle it pure.”

My Review: Pale golden in the glass.  Sweet pineapple, grassy minerality and butter notes on the fragrant nose.  Full flavor on the palate of Meyer lemon, tart pineapple with grapefruit zest on the finish.  This is one of my favorite 2024 Monterey County sauvignon blancs. October 2025 and March 2026

2023 Bernardus Chardonnay, Soberanes Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, 14.7% ABV, $55 (#1728)

Winery Notes: “Our 2023 Soberanes Chardonnay exhibits robust flavors and aromas, highlighted by rich toasted oak and caramel notes.  The palate is intense, with hints of lees and tropical fruits, kept in balance with a delicately crisp finish. Our Soberanes Chardonnay exemplifies the flavor and quality of this special grape growing region.”

My Review: Yellow in the glass. Buttery nose, followed by tasty flavors on the lively palate. Quintissential Monterey SLH chardonnay. March 2026

2022 Parsonage Wild Card Red Wine, Monterey County, 15% ABV, $42 (#1725)

Winery Notes: “Lots of lush red fruit with floral and herbal notes in the alluring nose of this six varietal blend. The medium-structured palate is loaded with red berries, cherries, and hints of mulberry and pomegranate.”  Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Grenache, Syrah

My Review: Pale purple in color with a clear rim. Deep jammy fruit in the nose with some rose petals and mocha notes. Jolly rancher on the palate. March 2026

2022 Parsonage The BDL Red Wine, Central Coast AVA, 15% ABV, $44 (#1726)

Winery Notes: “Our Bordeaux-style beauty. The bouquet leaps from the glass with dark fruit, anise and tobacco. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot harmonize in a satisfying melange of dark berries, cherries and plum with a medium-firm mouthfeel and finish.” 

My Review: Garnet in glass. Dark cherry and oak on the nose. Balanced palate with a tannic finish. Still young, but could age into a nice wine. I took one home. March 2026

2022 Parsonage Rocco Reserve Syrah, Carmel Valley AVA, Monterey County, 15% ABV, $98 (#1727)

Winery Notes: “The nose, the palate, they shout out I am a beautiful serious beast of a wine!! This vintage of Rocco is an unrestrained force of nature. Dark in berries, currants, cherries, and chocolate. Swirling in the background are savory spices and meaty umami wrapped in a muscular palate structure. The ’22 Rocco bellows from the mountaintops, “PAIR ME WITH A RIBEYE!!

My Review: Beautiful garnet in the glass. Smooth, dark fruit on the nose. Mocha and a touch of funk on the nose and palate. This is year over year one of my favorite wines and I took one home. March 2026
